We will be stopping for food AFTER we leave VBHS, so please plan to eat breakfast and possibly even bring a lunch or substantial snack. We will have snacks as well for students. Please plan to bring around $10 for lunch. Students will need to COME TO SCHOOL in their full concert black uniform. There will be no time to change. Students in wind ensemble will come to the band room at the start of 3rd period on April 22nd. You will be excused from 3rd, 5h, and 7th periods. 9:10 - warm up and continuity rehearsal 10:15 - load trailer/bus 10:30 - leave PSLHS 11:30 - arrive at VBHS 12:00 - required listening 1:00 - warm up 1:30 - perform 2:00 - required listening 2:30 - load and leave 3:00 - food stop! That time of year is upon us! It is time to gear up and get ready for next years marching season! In this post, you will find any necessary information to prepare for your audition and/or your leadership interview!
Interviews: Who has to interview? Anyone who is planning to go out for a leadership position must complete an interview! These will be held in Mr. Wiley's office during classes on Thursday, and Friday, April 25th and 26th. Your time slot will be posted in the band room. How should I prepare? All leadership candidates should be expected to know the duties of the position(s) you are applying for. All candidates must dress professionally for their interview and expect to answer questions that revolve around what your expectations are to better the band program. Auditions: Who has to audition? Not all leadership candidates have to complete an audition. Only those seeking to be on executive leadership (Drum Major, Band Captain, or 1st and 2nd Lieutenant), or a section leader/section captain must complete an audition. You will find the requirements for your auditions below. Drum Major Auditions: Drum Major auditions will be held in the PLSHS Band Room on Wednesday, April 24th from 2:00pm-3:30pm. During this audition, you must conduct a prepared piece of your choosing, conduct the prepared excerpt, sight analyze a score provided to you, and must perform marching fundamentals and teach marching fundamentals. Refer to Drum Major Audition Sheet given to you. Executive Leadership/Section Leader Auditions: Executive Leadership Auditions will be held in the PSLHS Band Room on Tuesday, April 23rd from 2:00pm - 6:00pm. Your audition times will be posted in the PSLHS Band Room. This audition will be judged based on 3 categories: Performing Marching Fundamentals, Teaching Marching Fundamentals, and Playing. Performing Marching Fundamentals - Leadership Candidates will be asked to demonstrate basic marching skills. Be prepared to demonstrate from the following commands - ( You should prepare all, but will be asked to perform 5)
Playing - All executive leadership/section leader candidates Candidates will have to play major scales on their instruments. You will be performing 3 major scales from the following list: C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, G, D. Your scales should be in FBA rhythm with arpeggios. Bonus points will be applied to candidates who can perform scales in more than 1 octave. Color Guard Captain Auditions: Section captain auditions will be held in the PSLHS Bandroom on Tuesday, April 23rd from 2:00pm - 6:00pm. Your audition times will be posted in the band room. The color guard captain position will be judged on 4 categories: Performing Marching Fundamentals - Guard captain Candidates will be asked to demonstrate basic marching skills. Teaching Flag Basics - Candidates should be expected to teach drop spins, butterflies, and blue devils. Teaching Weapon Basics - Candidates should be expected to teach consecutives, stops, and singles. Percussion Captain Auditions: Section captain positions will be held in the PSLHS Bandroom Tuesday, April 23rd from 2:00pm - 6:00pm. Your audition time will be posted in the band room. The drum captain position will be judged on 4 categories: Performing Marching Fundamentals - Section Leader Candidates will be asked to demonstrate basic marching skills. Playing - It is important for the percussion captain to be able to demonstrate and play on all of the percussion instruments. You will be expected to perform all required material from the audition packed given to you by Mr. Cromer. Demonstrating a Sectional Plan - Leading sectionals will be a very large part of the percussion captain job. During your audition, you will have to give a verbal plan outlining your ideal sectional. This will be asked interview style. Pit Captain will need to demonstrate a competent understanding on Mallets. - Tuesday we will have wind ensemble rehearsal from 2-4pm and guard practice from 2-4pm. - On Thursday we are planning to have our 3rd Marching Jag challenge where the band competes in fun games against each other! This would be after school from 2-5pm on Thursday! - It is time to pick room mates for the band trip!! Like I said, we will be having suite style rooms for students, which is 6 students per room as opposed to 4. Please fill out the form linked below by Tuesday at 12pm! Either way, here’s what’s coming up this week! - Wind ensemble will rehearse Tuesday 2-4pm - Music in Our Schools (MIOS) honor band rehearsal on Tuesday 5:30pm-9:00pm. This will be at fort pierce central high school! Students responsible for their own transportation - MIOS honor band rehearsal on Wednesday 8:30am-3:30pm. This is at the Fenn Center in fort pierce! The concert is at 6:30pm. Students will be responsible for their own transportation and to have a dinner plan in between rehearsal and the concert. Lunch will be provided. Students will need to be back at the Fenn center at 6pm! The concert is free and open to the public! - Please make sure you’re keeping up with your band trip payments! Amazing work to Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble once again for your stellar performances this past Thursday! Your musicality and focus was incredible, and I truly hope it made for a significant musical experience for you all! Thank you the volunteers that came on the trip to chaperone! Your help always makes for a better day, and I really appreciate it! Good job to our winter guard and indoor percussion for doing well at Melbourne high school yesterday! The percussion got 2nd place and guard 3rd place in their classes! Percussion had an 11 point increase from their first competition last month which is huge! Now it’s time to look forward to the remainder of the year, and of course spring break first! Here’s what’s going on this week! - There will be no official after school practices this week!! We will begin practicing for our next cycle of events after the break. This will include: 1. state concert mpa for wind ensemble (April 22nd or 23rd) 2. Band trip performance (may 3rd-5th) 3. Spectrum concert prep (may 9th) 4. 2024 marching season prep (show reveal??? 🤔) The band calendar will be updated this week to include all after school rehearsals throughout the year and into the summer - Please keep up with your band trip payments! Everyone is invited to come out beginning at 6pm to eat, have fun, and enjoy both concert bands as we push towards MPA! This will be in the cafeteria! - Wind ensemble WILL have our final after school rehearsal on Tuesday 2-4pm before the concert. - Color guard will practice Tuesday 2:30-4:30pm. - Thursday is concert MPA. All band students will go to A lunch on Thursday and report to the band room at 11:30am in their full concert black! We will be leaving on buses at 12:00pm to Vero Beach High School! A separate concert MPA post will be made tomorrow with all the details. - Friday we are putting on a “Family and Friends” performance for our Indoor Percussion and Winterguard groups! This will be at 6:00pm in the gym! It will be FREE and a cool and easy chance to see what our guard and percussion students have been up to as they prep for their final competition of the season on Saturday! - Saturday will be the final FFCC competition at Melbourne High School for guard and percussion! Also, Mr. Gardner, who was my first band director, will be out for our after school rehearsal on Tuesday from 2-4pm! Let’s make sure to have pencils for each of these rehearsals and be ready to learn! - Color guard will practice Tuesday and Thursday 2:30-5:00pm. - Indoor percussion will practice Tuesday and Friday, 6:30-9:30pm and 3:30-6:30pm. - Symphonic band will practice Thursday 2-4pm. - Don’t forget your band trip payments! They can be paid online on school pay (link sent out in last weeks news), or in person via cash or check. Each student should have paid $300 if keeping up with band trip payments. If you need to know your balance, please ask me! - Students will be off from school on Wednesday. -indoor percussion Saturday 1-8pm - Next week we have multiple events going on! Band family dinner concert on March 5th in our cafeteria 6pm. Concert MPA on March 7th at vero beach high school, students will leave school at 12pm and return at 9pm. Symphonic band performs at 2:30pm and wind ensemble at 5:30pm! - There will be indoor percussion practice on Tuesday when return back to pslhs from pre mpa until 9:30pm. - Thursday we will have symphonic band practice from 2-4pm, and winter guard from 2:30-5:00pm - Friday is indoor percussion from 3:30-6:30pm - In just a few short weeks we have some exciting things coming up! On March 5th we have our band family dinner pre mpa concert! This will be in the cafeteria at 6pm and dinner will be provided to all students and parents before we perform our MPA program one last time in a comfortable environment! - March 7th will be concert band MPA at vero beach high school. Symphonic band will perform at 2:30pm and wind ensemble at 7:00pm. - We will be having a Family and Friends Performance of our indoor percussion and winter guard shows on Friday march 8th for free in the gym! This is to give everyone an opportunity to see the shows before the students perform them for the final time on March 9th at Melbourne High School for their second FFCC competition! - On March 26th, and 27th, the Music In Our Schools Honor Band will be happening! We had a very large number of students show interest in this honor band, and unfortunately we could not select everyone… The final list is being finalized and the roster of selected students and chair order will be posted in the band room tomorrow or Wednesday.
